Students who are considering a career in elementary school teaching, secondary education and/or early childhood development will find this to be a very relevant opportunity that offers valuable experience. The Reading People (formerly Capital Area Literacy Coalition, CALC) is where LCC tutors actually work; it's conveniently located within the City of Lansing near LCC's downtown campus.
Most tutors participate by assisting with the in-school children's program(s) at The Reading People: www.thereadingpeople.org. Some tutors help in the areas of Adult Basic Reading, GED preparation and/or English as a Second Language / English as a Foreign Language (ESL/EFL). Additional duties may include participating in team projects, organizing donated books and helping with related office tasks. Basic Reading Tutor Training (BRTT) is provided on-site. Tutors are paid for all training sessions attended and successfully completed. No prior experience is necessary. The Reading People provides ongoing tutor support, training and instructional materials. A tutor reference manual is also provided upon completion of training.
Worksite Location: located at The Reading People (formerly Capital Area Literacy Coalition, CALC) main office is conveniently located within 1.0 mile of LCC's downtown campus and accessible by CATA bus route at: 1028 E. Saginaw Ave., Lansing, MI 48906
Required Qualifications: students must file the 2025-26 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and be eligible to receive Work-Study that's awarded by LCC's Financial Aid Dept. This funding is only awarded to eligible students, if/when they accept a Final Job Offer for an on-campus student position. FWS money actually pays the student's wages while they actively work and submit a time card.
Final candidates will be subject to a criminal background check as part of the employment process.
