Job Summary:

The Staff Writer position for The Lookout (LCC's student newspaper) is primarily responsible for writing stories, taking photos, proofreading drafts/copies, etc. The following tasks are also part of this job:
• Attend regular staff meetings each week;
• Write at least two stories for each issue of The Lookout;
• Proofread stories written by fellow staff members;
• Respond to complaints from readers and sources and work to resolve them in a fair and friendly manner;
• Assist with circulation duties as assigned by the adviser and circulation manager;
• Utilize the dictionary, a thesaurus and the A.P. Stylebook on a regular basis; study the A.P. Stylebook and consider it the “journalist’s bible;”
• Be familiar with libel laws, the laws pertaining to public meetings and the “Model Code of Ethics For Student Journalists;”
• Use good judgment at all times; confer with staff members and the adviser, and refer to magazines and manuals to make good decisions about newspaper content;
• Be knowledgeable of the campus community and serve as a spokesperson for The Lookout.

Requirements for LCC Student Employment:

The primary purpose of student employment is to provide current LCC students the opportunity to acquire job skills and experiences during semesters in which they are attending classes as follows:
Enrolled and actively attending the following minimum total LCC credit hours by semester:
     - Fall and/or Spring Semester(s) = 6.0 credits (taken over 16-week period)     
     - Summer Semester = 3.0 credits (taken over 8-week period)
2.00 GPA minimum (unless it is the student's first semester of enrollment at LCC or approval to waive requirement is granted from the Student Employment Coordinator)

Note: International students (i.e. F-1 visa holders w/ valid I-20 issued by LCC) must meet the following minimum enrollment requirements each semester, in order to maintain employment eligibility per United States Citizenship & Immigration Services (USICS):
     - Fall and/or Spring Semester(s) = 12.0 credits (taken over 16-week period)
     - Summer Semester = 3.0 credits (taken over 8-week period)

Preferred Qualifications:

• Strong writing skills
• Ability to take photos
• Strong understanding of the English language
• Good people skills
